What a Coincidence–Champagne and Chickens (humor)

A chicken farmer went to a local bar, sat next to a woman and ordered a glass of champagne.

The woman perks up and says, ‘How about that?

I just ordered a glass of champagne, too!’

‘What a coincidence’ the farmer says.

‘This is a special day for me, so I’m celebrating.’

‘This is a special day for me too, so I’m also celebrating!’ says the woman.

‘What a coincidence!’ says the farmer!

As they clinked glasses the man asked, ‘What are you celebrating?’

‘My husband and I have been trying for years to have a child and today my gynaecologist told me that I am pregnant!’

‘What a coincidence,’ says the man.

‘I’m a chicken farmer and for years all of my hens were infertile, but today they are all laying fertilized eggs.’

‘That’s great!’ says the woman.

‘How did your chickens become fertile?’

‘I used a different cock,’ he replied.

The woman smiled and said, ‘What a coincidence.’

Michelle Obama vs. Cindy McCain: Why Barack Won

Good morning, gentle blog reader,

Is it me or throughout the election did Cindy McCain not seem to be too interested in moving to the White House?  I sense she’s relieved that her husband lost and that she’s probably looking forward to leaving the glare of the presidential election publicity machine.

Cindy always looked lovely in that old-fashioned, classic, 50′s sort of way in terms of dress and hairstyles:

But, Cindy McCain always seemed a bit removed (aloof?) from politics and her husband’s campaign.  Oftentimes, she seemed to be going through the motions–you know, the “My husband really wants this so I’ll smile and force myself to play along for his sake” type of thing, but I never sensed her heart was really into spending the next 4 to 8 years in the White House.

Michelle Obama, on the other hand, seemed to be much more into running for First Lady.  She was out there–dancing on ”Ellen,” giving speeches, and publicly bonding with her husband.  She gave her all for the cause:

I bet Obama’s glad Michelle was his running mate!

What do you think–Were these First Lady candidates in the same league?

How Michelle Obama Clinched the Election for Barack

Good morning, gentle blog reader,

Well, it’s not just us Americans who are in a frenzy, the British are excited too about our new president and his family.  See what they have to say about Michelle Obama, candidate’s wife extraordinaire:

Commentators say Michelle Obama was key to her husband’s triumph

She initially didn’t want her husband to run for president. But today Michelle Obama was being hailed as a key player in Barack Obama’s historic White House triumph.

Michelle Obama was so crucial to clinching victory that campaign aides nicknamed her The Closer.

Now she is making history all of her own by becoming America’s first ever black First Lady.

And her admirers are labelling her as a 21st Century Jackie Kennedy who will bring glamour back to the White House.

The 44-year-old emerged from the shadows to attract a spotlight all of her own during her husband’s exhausting 22-month campaign.

When Mr Obama had to break off from electioneering just days before the election to visit his dying grandmother in Hawaii, it was Michelle he called on to step in for him at events he had to miss.

Far from being angry at the Democrat candidate’s no-show, huge crowds happily cheered on his wife.

It was just the latest example of the growing influence the striking 5 ft 11 ins Ivy League-educated lawyer had on her 47-year-old husband’s quest to become America’s first black president.

She admits she was initially worried about the effect the gruelling campaign would have on her young family and still spends as much time as possible with the couple’s daughters Malia, ten, and Sasha, seven.

Then she was hesitant at moving to the forefront as ‘the love of my life’ went from Democrat outsider to become runaway favourite to capture the keys to the West Wing.

But her popularity and eloquence on the campaign trail proved so effective she was increasingly called into action.

‘I am very passionate about change in the country and that’s what you see,’ she said.

There was just one major hiccup when she became caught up in the fervor over her husband’s success early in the primary campaign when she said: ‘For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country.’

After being condemned as unpatriotic, she was relaunched as a kinder, gentler wife and mother. Her public hugs with her husband and their infamous ‘fist bump’ sent a message that they were a team.

Mrs Obama’s hugs with her husband showed the world they are a team

Although she insists she won’t have a formal role in the Oval Office, few important decisions in the past have gone by without her husband first checking with ‘the boss.’

She admitted she was worried at first with the kind of concerns that would trouble most mothers.

‘I thought more about my girls and how do we make sure their lives are whole, that they’re still focused on school, that their lives don’t get consumed in this campaign, that they feel loved and get the attention that they need, that we don’t miss their activities.

‘I worried about finances, making sure that we paid the mortgage. Those were the thoughts that went through my head,’ she said.

But she quickly saw that she needed to take time off from her job as vice president of community relations at the University of Chicago Hospitals to take a full-time role in the Obama campaign.

Mrs Obama said she was worried about how the gruelling campaign would affect their daughters Malia, ten, and Sasha, seven

Born to a working class family in Chicago, she was always determined to make the most of her opportunities.

Michelle Obama did her undergraduate studies at Princeton University, where she earned a degree in sociology with a minor in African-American studies.

She went on to Harvard Law School and then worked in a corporate law firm in Chicago. It was there she met Barack in 1988.

Although he is three years older, her husband spent several years working as a community organiser before going to law school. As a new lawyer, Michelle was assigned as his adviser.

They began dating soon after and were married in 1992.

Mr Obama regularly says he is lucky his wife never decided to run for office. In his book The Audacity of Hope he wrote, ‘If I ever had to run against her for public office, she would beat me without much difficulty.’

Mrs Obama says she has talked to her children about the changes in their life when they move into the White House next January.

And she admitted she didn’t know whether she could have gone through it all again had he lost.

‘I am not interested in putting my family through this again and again,’ she admitted.

‘Don’t screw it up buddy,’ she once said to her husband before the big speech at the 2004 Democratic convention that helped launch his national career.

And she has been at his side every step of the way to make sure he didn’t.

Dell pressures workers into leave without pay: Bon voyage!…or else

Good morning, gentle reader,

Despite Election Night euphoria (or sadness, depending upon whom you voted for), the economy’s still in the dumps. Not too long ago, Dell was doing well.  Today, well, Dell is slashing payroll costs bigtime to stay afloat:

Dell orders leave without pay

By Austin Modine

Posted in Financial News, 5th November 2008 01:08 GMT

Nearly all employees at Dell are being asked to either take a week of unpaid leave. If they don’t obey, another round of layoffs will begin.

Workers at the Round Rock-based PC vendor recently got an email memo from founder and CEO Michael Dell outlining the company’s latest efforts to cut costs this quarter.

Part of Dell’s scheme asks workers to take up to five days off without pay sometime within the next three months. The company also instituted a global hiring freeze, is offering voluntary severance packages, cutting travel budgets, and sacking temporary and contract employees.

“We’re taking action in this fourth quarter to reduce costs and improve Dell’s long term competitiveness in a time of economic uncertainty,” said Dell spokesman David Frink.

The unpaid leave will be strictly voluntary, Dell’s memo stated, but it also warned the company may resort to layoffs if this round of cutbacks doesn’t reduce operating expenses as hoped. The company didn’t say how many employees would need to take leave time to consider the program a success.

The three months time frame ends in January, not coincidently the same time as the close of Dell’s fourth quarter 2009. Like a Jenny Craig reject, Dell has been desperately trying to make reductions, only to feel the bitter poison of defeat each time it steps on the scale.

Dell’s motto now is to save $3bn in annual costs by 2010 by means of layoffs, shifting to lower cost producers, layoffs, miscellaneous cost-cutting measures, and layoffs. Also, if there’s time afterward: layoffs. Dell has already axed at least 8,800 jobs since last year.

Of course, just like PC market share, Dell plays second fiddle to Hewlett-Packard in mass sacking. HP announced in September it would lay off 24,600 jobs worldwide as it merges the massive IT services organization EDS with its own existing massive IT service organization. ®

The Republicans Went from Being the Party of Lincoln to the Party of Winkin’

That’s from Bill Maher (when he was interviewed by Ellen Degeneres on Election Day).  Sadly, the “Party of Winkin’” didn’t make the cut for the White House this time around.

I’m glad the election resulted in a clear cut victory so that we don’t have to deal with recounts, election fraud issues, and complaints of unfairness over the election results.

Whew–I’m glad the election’s over with and look forward to GWB, Cheney, et al packing their bags and making way for the first black president of the US of A!

Bush to Obama: “What an Awesome Night for You”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/05/bush-to-obama-what-an-awe_n_141243.html

WASHINGTON — President Bush has called Barack Obama to congratulate him on winning the presidency.

The two-term Republican president told the Illinois senator upon his historic win: “What an awesome night for you, your family and your supporters.”

Barack Obama was elected the nation’s first black president Tuesday night in dominant fashion, besting Republican John McCain.

Bush promised Obama a smooth transition to the White House.

Bush spokeswoman Dana Perino said the president told Obama: “You are about to go on one of the great journeys of life. Congratulations and go enjoy yourself.”

Biden Wins 7th Term in Senate but He’s Moving on Up

and he won’t get to serve it because he’ll be VP.

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/11/04/biden-wins-th-senate-term-serve/

WILMINGTON, Del. — Joe Biden has won a seventh term in the Senate, defeating Republican challenger Christine O’Donnell.

The call is based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

Biden won’t serve a full Senate term, however, because running mate Barack Obama won the presidency.

Biden will now resign his Senate seat and Delaware gets a new Democratic senator. Outgoing Democratic Gov. Ruth Ann Minner would likely appoint Biden’s replacement.

Potential contenders include Lt. Gov. John Carney and the senator’s son, Attorney General Beau Biden.
