Travel and Leisure, of course, chose mostly exotic places like Bhutan (a hole-in-the-wall country stuck between India and China, for those of us who are challenged geography-wise) and St. Maarten (a fun Caribbean island that I’d love to visit!). Reagan (Washington, D.C.) and JFK (New York City) topped the list for the U.S.
If Travel and Leisure had asked me (and how likely will that ever be?
), I’d cast my vote for LaGuardia Airport in New York City. Every time I fly in and out of there (and that hasn’t been too often lately, due to the economy chipping away at my “travel and leisure” money), I feel like the plane is either going to skim the East River (hydroplane, anyone?) or crash into a high-rise in Queens.
I’d also give LAX (Los Angeles) the nod for having scary runways. Last time I was there, as the plane descended (flying so low that we were eye level with the Hilton Hotel) the landing gear came out and then BAM…up we went again. The plane headed out over the Pacific, followed the coast until San Diego, and then headed back to LAX to try again.
The pilot said that he had to get off the runway because, though he’d been cleared for landing, a Singapore Airlines jumbo jet was parked on the runway ahead of him and he didn’t want to clip it. (Eek–it’s scary to think the control tower didn’t notice the jumbo jet parked on the runway–thank goodness the pilot caught that one in the knick of time!) I suspect that sort of thing happens far more often than reported at busy airports like LAX.
How about you? Travel and Leisure be da**ed–which runway do you think qualifies as the “scariest runway”?
